Anon, everyone’s rock bottom is different. Everyone’s recovery is different. You don’t get to be the judge of whether someone suffered enough, or lost enough. Your comment reads like you’ve got a lot of your own stuff going on that you’re taking out on the author.

Another nice story. I think you should consider re-writing Chapter 1, since this makes the following chapters implausible. A stroke recovery unit would not take a stroke patient unless it was expected that they would recover to be able to live an independent life, possibly with some help in daily life. Since Gunnar had his stroke 2 years prior to entering the home it is unlikely that his recovery in (mobility, speech, eating and drinking?) would have improved sufficiently to allow him to undertake the described activities after leaving the home. Most stroke recovery occurs in the first 6 months, i.e. before he entered the home. Since he was able to ice skate a week or two later, despite having balance problems, he clearly could have managed living at his own home.
\\tI was amused when I read that Gunnar was told to learn fast to use a “cheese sliver”. A “ost høvel” may will have produced a “sliver” of cheese on the first try but the normal translation would be a “cheese slicer” or, preferably, a “cheese plane”..
\\tJorunn, in the story, must be a mean woman, since she is only having to pay for one person on the tour for meals, instead of four, and then insisted that Gunnar had to pay for his own beer!
